Carrying Tension in Your Shoulders? Try Indian Head Massage

Pause for a second and notice your shoulders. Are they creeping up towards your ears? Is your jaw set a little tighter than it needs to be? So many of us carry our stress in the upper body — neck, shoulders, scalp and jaw — without ever noticing until someone eases it out. That’s exactly what Indian head massage is for.

An ancient practice, beautifully practical

Indian head massage — champissage — comes from the Ayurvedic tradition, where head massage has been part of family life for generations. The version I practise focuses on the upper back, shoulders, neck, scalp and face: all the places modern life loads with tension, screens and hurry.

No oils, no fuss

One of the loveliest things about this treatment is how easy it is to receive. You remain seated and fully clothed, and no oils are needed. That makes it a perfect choice if you’re short on time, new to massage, or simply prefer not to lie on a treatment bed.

What to expect

I work through the muscles of the upper back and shoulders with kneading and pressure techniques, ease the neck, then move to the scalp with rhythmic, soothing movements — the part where most people melt entirely. A session finishes with gentle work across the face, releasing the tension we hold in the brow and jaw without realising.

Afterwards, people often describe a floating lightness around the head and shoulders, softer breathing, and a clearer, quieter mind. Tension headaches born of tight shoulders often ease when this area finally lets go.

Who it suits

Almost everyone — and especially anyone who spends long hours at a desk, behind a wheel, or caring for others. If you’ve been rubbing your own neck at the end of each day, consider that your sign.

Your shoulders have been holding a lot. Come and let them put it down for a while in my calm garden clinic in Kilteragh.
